The sensitive creatures are present in some stretches and missing from others, which is exactly the pattern our work is meant to change.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section class=\"hw-water-explain\">\n\t\t\t\t<h3>What we are counting, and why it works<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tSome creatures that live on the riverbed cannot survive in polluted water. Others thrive in it. So the mix living in a stretch of river tells you what that water has been like for months, not just on the morning somebody tested it, which is what makes this a better measure than a single chemical reading.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tOur volunteers count the kinds of creature they find, not how many. Forty mayflies and one mayfly say the same thing: mayflies can live here.
