The immediate fast lift of the casting hand and forearm - thumb and forefinger pointing up - drives it to the bottom after entry (the Upper). Both are required. The foundation never changes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"><strong>The tap.<\/strong> On the forward stroke, TAP the grip - a quick, firm squeeze combined with a downward push of the hand. In Joe&#8217;s words: &#8220;I take my hand forward, and I tap. And that little tap with the squeeze as I&#8217;m pushing down gives me this Downer-Upper cast.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"><strong>Watch the entry.<\/strong> The weighted nymph kicks DOWN and enters the water first, before the leader lands flat. No pile on top, no immediate drag.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"><strong>Keep the rod tip high.<\/strong> That&#8217;s the &#8220;upper.&#8221; The elevated tip gives you control slack to manage the drift while the nymph sinks fast to the bottom where the fish feed.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"><strong>Read the clock.<\/strong> Stops below 10 o&#8217;clock = fly lands flat, drag immediate. 10-11 o&#8217;clock = controlled entry. Above 12 = a tuck develops and the fly sinks deeper still.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom:12px;\"><strong>Vary the water.<\/strong> Practice in plunge pools, runs, and flats.
