Baseline: what Trout Psychology currently covers
STRUCTURAL GAPS (site-level, not topic-level)
The two biggest exploitable gaps
π₯ GAP 1 β Trout behaviour and cognition is unclaimed by every competitor analysed
π₯ GAP 2 β Nobody teaches teaching, and one competitor teaches casting on a lawn
Client: Trout Psychology β https://www.troutpsychology.com
Prepared: August 27, 2026
Engagement: Local Marketing Playbook β Phase 1, Foundation
Companion document: Competitor Intelligence.md (same folder)
Competitor set analysed:
1. Red's Fly Shop β redsflyfishing.com (local, Yakima River; booking + education)
2. Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center β howtoflyfish.orvis.com / orvis.com/fly-fishing-schools / news.orvis.com (national authority incumbent)
3. Gink & Gasoline β ginkandgasoline.com (national editorial authority)
This is not a keyword list. Trout Psychology's goal is brand authority for a proprietary method, so gaps are ranked by authority-building potential, not by estimated search volume β which is not observable without a paid tool. Where a gap would normally carry a volume figure, this document says what is unknown and how to check it.
Ranking factors used:
- Wedge value β does covering this topic advance the Method, or just fill a hole?
- Defensibility β can competitors copy it? (Anything requiring a behavior-analysis credential scores highest.)
- Competitive weakness β how badly do the incumbents cover it today?
- Commercial pull β does it feed guide trips or the $250/mo virtual lessons?
Full observed content footprint (troutpsychology.com):
| Page | Type | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | Commercial | "Catch more fish. Catch bigger fish. Get there faster with Trout Psychology." / "Woman owned. Woman led." |
| /about-the-science | The only educational page on the site | ~850 words |
| /aboutthemission | Brand | Short |
| /instructors | Bio | Short |
| /guidedtrips, /castinglessons, /private-fly-fishing-lessons-washington, /washington-casting-camp, /streamer-stomp, /schools, /educational-fly-fishing-retreats, /giftcertificates | Service/commercial | Short |
| Blog / articles / resources | β | β Does not exist |
The structural finding: Trout Psychology has one page of educational content on the entire domain. Red's publishes multiple posts per week; Gink & Gasoline publishes daily; Orvis maintains 28+ structured video chapters plus a full reference layer. In strict terms, almost every topic in this document is a gap, because the client covers almost nothing.
The good news is that this makes the build a clean-sheet exercise rather than a remediation. The entities the client does own β listed below β are exactly the ones no competitor owns.
| Trout Psychology's entities (present) | Competitor entities (absent from TP) |
|---|---|
| Behavior Analysis Β· laws of learning Β· positive reinforcement Β· environmental shaping of behavior Β· task decomposition ("bite-sized pieces") Β· 3:1 ratio Β· custom curricula Β· strategy blueprints Β· flow charts Β· river journal Β· workbooks Β· skills survey Β· "think like a trout" Β· river-based instruction Β· streamer fishing Β· dry flies | Reading water Β· finding trout Β· hatches & entomology Β· Euro nymphing Β· trout Spey Β· stillwater trout Β· mending & drift Β· knots Β· fly tying patterns Β· leader/tippet construction Β· gear & rod selection Β· river flows & conditions reporting Β· stream access law Β· fishing licences Β· seasonal hatch calendars Β· fish species profiles Β· casting mechanics taxonomy (overhead / roll / bow-and-arrow) Β· euro-nymph rigging Β· catch-and-release handling |
Bold = missing from Trout Psychology. The list is long because the client has no content engine β not because the knowledge is absent.
Impact key: HIGH = directly builds Method authority and ranking potential Β· MEDIUM = comprehensiveness and trust Β· LOW = table-stakes / UX
| # | Gap | Who covers it | Why it matters | Impact | Recommended asset |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trout cognition and learning β how trout actually learn, habituate, and discriminate | Nobody, properly. Orvis covers "Reading Water" (Ch. 8) and "Finding Trout" (Adv. 7) but fish senses and cognition are absent from its navigation entirely. G&G's "Listen to the Fish" handles it in ~850 anecdotal words with zero citations and no named framework | This is the Method's home ground and the whole competitive set has left it empty. First properly sourced treatment becomes the definitive result and the most quotable asset in the sport | HIGH | Pillar page (2,500β3,500 words): "How Trout Learn: The Behavioural Science Behind Selective Fish." Cited (operant conditioning, habituation, discrimination learning, salmonid vision, lateral line). Schema-marked Article. The engagement's flagship. |
| 2 | A named, published teaching method with defined vocabulary | Nobody. Red's says "direct and practical." Orvis says "expert teachers." G&G offers "intuitive pattern recognition rather than systematic principles" | Named frameworks get cited, linked and quoted by AI answer engines. Unnamed tips do not. This converts Kristen's head-knowledge into a durable brand asset β the stated goal of the engagement | HIGH | Hub page: "The Trout Psychology Method" β named stages, defined terms, diagram, expansion of the current ~850-word /about-the-science into a real 2,000+ word framework page with child pages per principle |
| 3 | Glossary of behavioural terms in angler English | Nobody. Orvis has a beginners' glossary of fishing terms; no one has a glossary of learning terms | Whoever names the concepts owns them. Glossary entries are disproportionately quoted by ChatGPT/Perplexity/AI Overviews. Also builds internal-linking spine for the whole cluster | HIGH | "Trout Psychology Glossary" β 20β30 entries (habituation, extinction burst, stimulus generalisation, discrimination, shaping, chaining, reinforcement scheduleβ¦), each with a plain-English definition + a Yakima River example. DefinedTermSet schema |
| 4 | Why land-based casting instruction fails to transfer to the river | Nobody β and Red's is exposed here. Red's Fly Fishing 101 states verbatim: "These are land based courses so students don't need any gear to participate" ($149, ~6 hrs) | The client is 100% river-based. Stimulus generalisation is a real, citable concept and it is Kristen's degree. This single page turns the competitor's highest-volume education product into a liability, without naming them | HIGH | Comparison page: "Lawn Casting vs. River Instruction: What Actually Transfers." Includes the honest comparison table (water, ratio, curriculum type, instructor credential) |
| 5 | Student-to-instructor ratio as a published, defended standard | Nobody publishes a ratio. Not Red's University, not Red's 101, not Orvis's 30 schools | The client's 3:1 max is a hard, checkable differentiator that no competitor can match without publishing a weaker number. Currently buried in prose rather than being a positioning asset | HIGH | Service-page module + standalone explainer: "Why We Cap Instruction at 3:1" β deployed across every education service page |
| 6 | Practice design β how to actually improve between trips | Nobody. Orvis teaches technique, never how to practise it. G&G circles it (deliberate practice, "measuring your cast," avoiding panic casts) without the vocabulary | Uncontested, high-intent, and the direct top-of-funnel for the $250/mo virtual casting lessons β the client's only scalable product. Queries like "why am I not improving at fly fishing" have no good owner | HIGH | Cluster (3 posts): "Why You've Plateaued," "How to Practise Casting So It Sticks," "The 20-Minute Practice Protocol." Each CTA β virtual lessons |
| 7 | Neurodiversity-informed and adaptive fly fishing instruction | Nobody in US fly fishing instruction. A live screen found only awareness charities and UK organisations (Autism Anglers, iFishiBelong) | Completely uncontested, genuinely underserved, and an unimpeachable proof point for the Method's rigour (~10 yrs teaching students on the autism spectrum). Also a strong earned-media and partnership hook | HIGH | Pillar page + service page: "Fly Fishing Instruction for Neurodivergent Anglers." Pair with an outreach list of WA autism and disability-outdoors organisations |
| 8 | Yakima River fishing conditions, hatches and seasonal guidance | Red's (river reports with flow/temp/clarity, multiple/week) and The Evening Hatch (reports) own this locally | The highest-frequency recurring local search demand on the client's home water, and the client captures none of it. Also the natural entry point for guide-trip bookings | HIGH | "Yakima River Hatch & Strategy Calendar" β one evergreen pillar, month-by-month, framed behaviourally (what conditions change trout behaviour, not just what's hatching). Do not attempt to out-post Red's on weekly reports |
| 9 | Reading water | Orvis owns it β a dedicated chapter ("8: Reading Water") in the flagship series | Foundational topic the client has no page for at all. But the client can reframe rather than repeat: water is read to predict behaviour, not to locate structure | MEDIUM | Post: "Reading Water as Behaviour Prediction" β deliberately differentiated from the Orvis treatment, linking up to Gap #1 |
| 10 | Streamer fishing β depth content on the client's own specialism | Partially: G&G covers streamer patterns; Orvis has streamer flies in the tying library; Kelly Galloup owns this nationally | Kristen specialises in streamers and runs a branded program (Streamer Stomp), yet has no educational content on it. This is expertise sitting entirely unmonetised in search | MEDIUM | Cluster (3β4 posts): "Why Trout Chase," "Streamer Retrieve as a Behavioural Variable," "Reading a Follow," "The Streamer Eat vs. the Streamer Refusal." Internal-link to /streamer-stomp |
| 11 | Assessment and self-diagnosis tools | Orvis has quizzes (basic/advanced) and flash cards (source) β the only competitor doing assessment at all | The client already owns better instruments internally (skills survey, workbooks, flowcharts, river journal) but publishes none of them. These are the strongest available lead magnets and link-earning assets | MEDIUM | Two free downloadables: "Angler Skills Self-Assessment" (email-gated) and "The River Journal Template" (ungated, link bait) |
| 12 | Structured skill progression / curriculum ladder | Red's (University): 101 / 201 / 301, technical intros, fishalongs, framed as "Associates-level degree through a four-year Master's program". Orvis: 14 basic chapters β 14 advanced modules | Both incumbents publish a visible learning path. The client's custom-curriculum model is better pedagogy but currently reads as unstructured to a prospect comparing options | MEDIUM | Page: "Your Learning Path" β a visible skills map showing how assessment β custom curriculum β mastery works, positioned explicitly against fixed ladders |
| 13 | Teaching someone else to fly fish (parents, partners, friends) | Nobody, except Orvis's Parent-Child school SKU ($589/person) | A real query set with no owner, and it is squarely the client's discipline. Strong shareability and a natural gift-certificate tie-in | MEDIUM | Post: "How to Teach Someone to Fly Fish Without Ruining It for Them." CTA β gift certificates |
| 14 | Women in fly fishing | Red's runs "Women's Programs" as a course SKU | The client is woman-owned and woman-led and an active advocate, yet the homepage claim "Woman owned. Woman led." has no supporting content behind it | MEDIUM | Post + landing page on the client's own advocacy position, linked from the homepage claim |
| 15 | Instructor authority pages (E-E-A-T) | G&G publishes under two named bylines (Kent Klewein, Louis Cahill); Red's names ~30 team members | Google and AI answer engines weight author credibility heavily. Kristen's credential β B.S. Behavior Analysis, 25 yrs angling, 20 yrs instruction β is the single strongest E-E-A-T signal in the competitive set and is currently under-deployed | MEDIUM | Expanded author pages for Kristen and Nate with Person schema, credentials, media features (The Fly Fish Journal; The Lost Meander Podcast, July 2025), plus author bylines on every article |
| 16 | Casting mechanics taxonomy | Red's 101 (overhead, roll, bow-and-arrow); Orvis (Fly Casting category, "13. Advanced Casting Tips," dedicated advanced casting schools at $429/$489) | The client sells casting camp and $250/mo virtual casting lessons, but has no casting content indexed. Pure commercial-intent gap | MEDIUM | Cluster (3 posts) on casting faults and their behavioural causes, feeding /castinglessons and /washington-casting-camp |
| 17 | Entomology / hatch identification | Orvis ("10. Hatches," flash cards); Red's (101 curriculum, fly tying posts) | Table stakes for perceived completeness in the topic cluster. Low differentiation available | LOW | One reference post framed as "What Bugs Tell You About Trout Behaviour" β enough to close the hole without competing on entomology depth |
| 18 | Gear, rods, tackle, knots, fly tying | All three, heavily. Red's and Orvis are retailers; G&G posts patterns and gear near-daily | Deliberately concede. The client cannot and should not compete here β and not selling gear is itself a credibility asset for an independent educator | LOW | No asset. Optionally one page: "We don't sell you gear. Here's why that matters." |
| 19 | Fishing reports at competitor cadence | Red's (multiple/week), The Evening Hatch | Deliberately concede. A two-person operation cannot sustain this and would burn the content budget that should go to Gaps #1β7 | LOW | No asset. Covered adequately by the evergreen calendar in Gap #8 |
| 20 | Stream access law, licences, family resources | Orvis (Stream Access Laws, Fishing License info, Family Fly Fishing) | Utility content that closes topical-completeness holes cheaply and earns local links | LOW | One WA-specific resource page: licences, regulations, and Yakima access points |
| Structure | Red's | Orvis | G&G | Trout Psychology | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blog / article engine | β multiple/week | β vast | β daily | β none | The foundational gap. Nothing else in this document can ship without it. |
| Named method / framework | β | β | β | β οΈ exists offline only | The client's entire advantage, currently invisible |
| Glossary | β | β (fishing terms) | β | β | Cheap, high-citation asset |
| Video library | β YouTube | β video-first | β οΈ some | β οΈ some YouTube, [CONFIRM ownership] | Orvis's advantage is video; the client's Instagram reels are already this content in disposable form |
| Podcast | β Podbean | β segmented by species | β | β | Kristen has appeared as a guest (The Lost Meander, July 2025) but hosts nothing |
| Downloadable resources | β | β flash cards, quizzes, tippet chart | β | β | Client's internal instruments are better; publish them |
| FAQ / schema markup | β οΈ | β οΈ | β | β | Direct AI-answer-engine visibility play |
| Author bylines + credentials | β οΈ team page | β οΈ brand-led | β two named authors | β οΈ instructors page only | Client has the best raw credential and the weakest deployment |
| Comparison / vs. content | β | β | β | β | Wide open, and the client wins every comparison she publishes |
| Email capture | β newsletter | β account system | β | β [CONFIRM] | No lead magnet exists to capture against |
Verified, not inferred:
- Orvis: direct inspection of howtoflyfish.orvis.com found trout behaviour addressed only indirectly via "Finding Trout," "Stillwater Trout" and "Hatches." Fish senses do not appear in the navigation. Angler psychology does not appear in the navigation. Orvis News does not cover trout behaviour, fish cognition, or teaching methodology in depth.
- Gink & Gasoline: "Listen to the Fish" β its most visible trout-behaviour piece β is ~850 words, anecdote plus bullets, with no references to research, studies or formal science, and no named methodology. It offers "intuitive pattern recognition rather than systematic principles."
- Red's: the blog is tactical tips and river reports. No behavioural content.
Meanwhile the "trout behavior" SERP is fragmented across low-authority regional blogs and magazine pieces, with only Troutbitten circling the territory credibly.
Why it is exploitable: the incumbents cannot follow. Orvis will not build a cognition module because it does not sell rods; G&G cannot cite research it does not have; Red's has no credentialed instructor. Trout Psychology is the only operator in this set that can write this content at all.
Ship: the cited pillar page (Gap #1), the glossary (Gap #3), and the Method hub (Gap #2) as one interlinked cluster. That cluster is the brand-authority engagement in a single move.
Verified, not inferred:
- Red's Fly Fishing 101 ($149, ~6 hours) states in its own copy: "These are land based courses so students don't need any gear to participate."
- No competitor in this set publishes a student-to-instructor ratio. Not Red's University, not Red's 101, not any of Orvis's 30 schools.
- Competitor teaching-credential claims in full: Red's β "direct and practical, led by passionate anglers and experienced guides"; Orvis β "expert teachers who know how to make it fun." Both are claims about fishing ability, not teaching ability.
- Orvis has no Washington state school β 30 schools across ~20 states, nearest being Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Why it is exploitable: Trout Psychology is 100% river-based, publishes a 3:1 cap, builds custom curricula from a skills survey, and is led by someone with a behaviour-analysis degree and ~20 years of water-based instruction. Every one of those is checkable, and every competitor loses the comparison on its own published pages. This gap needs no new expertise β only publication.
Ship: the lawn-vs-river page (Gap #4), the ratio explainer (Gap #5), the practice-design cluster (Gap #6), and the learning-path page (Gap #12).
| Phase | Assets | Gaps addressed |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 β unblock | Fix "SCco." in site title tags (brand name is currently missing from the client's own SERP titles); stand up the blog/resources section | Structural prerequisite |
| Weeks 2β4 β the wedge | Method hub page (expand /about-the-science) Β· Trout cognition pillar Β· Glossary | 1, 2, 3 |
| Weeks 4β6 β the contrast | Lawn-vs-river page Β· "Why 3:1" explainer Β· Learning Path page | 4, 5, 12 |
| Weeks 6β8 β the funnel | Practice-design cluster (3 posts) Β· Skills Self-Assessment Β· River Journal template | 6, 11 |
| Weeks 8β12 β the territory | Neurodiversity pillar Β· Yakima Hatch & Strategy Calendar Β· Streamer cluster Β· author pages with Person schema | 7, 8, 10, 15 |
| Ongoing | 2 long-form Method pieces/month. Do not chase competitor cadence. | 9, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20 |
No search volumes, difficulty scores, traffic estimates, DA, backlink counts or follower counts appear in this document, because none are observable without paid tooling. To convert the ranking above into a volume-weighted plan, the client would need:
| Needed | Tool |
|---|---|
| Search volume + difficulty per gap topic | Ahrefs Keywords Explorer or SEMrush Keyword Magic |
| Which competitor URLs actually earn traffic | Ahrefs Site Explorer β Top Pages (Red's, Orvis, G&G) |
| Keyword overlap and true content gap by URL | Ahrefs "Content Gap" report β run troutpsychology.com against all three |
| Whether the Yakima calendar is worth the build | Google Search Console + Keyword Planner for "Yakima River hatch/flows" demand |
| AI answer engine visibility | Manually query ChatGPT / Perplexity / Google AI Overviews for "how do trout learn," "fly fishing lessons Washington," "think like a trout" and record who is cited today |
The last row is free, takes 20 minutes, and is the most relevant baseline for an authority engagement. Run it before the pillar ships, and again 90 days after.
