The short version
The five streamer retrieves worth knowing are the jerk-strip, the steady strip, the down-and-across swing, the sink-and-draw, and the bank-tight flush. Each one makes the fly behave like a different kind of vulnerable prey. Choose based on water temperature, clarity and how far a fish is currently willing to travel — not on which one you like doing.
Most streamer instruction describes hand motions. Do this with your line hand. Point the rod tip here. Strip, strip, pause.
That is a description of what you do. It is not an explanation of why the fish does anything, and if you only learn the first one you are stuck the moment conditions change — which on a river is roughly every forty minutes.
So here are five retrieves, and for each one, the actual question: what predatory response does this exploit, and what conditions make that response likely? That is the reasoning I teach on the water, and it is the difference between owning five tricks and owning a decision.
Two things, and they are not "the fly looks realistic."
One: motion consistent with prey that is trying to leave. Trout detect and track moving objects with vision and with the lateral line, a row of flow-sensing organs that reads pressure and water displacement. Research on rainbow trout in turbulent flow has shown that both systems contribute to how a trout positions and behaves in complex current. In practice this means a fly is broadcasting information about itself — its size, speed, and the disturbance it makes — before the fish can necessarily see it clearly. In dirty water or low light, the lateral line is doing more of the work, which is a real argument for a bigger, pushier fly rather than a more accurate one.
Two: a payoff worth the swim. A chase costs calories. Kurt Fausch's foundational work on stream salmonids frames position and prey choice as net energy gain: energy in, minus energy burned getting it. Every fish has a pursuit distance — how far it will currently travel for a given meal — and that distance shrinks as water cools. A retrieve that works beautifully at 58 °F can be physically un-catchable at 42 °F, not because the fish isn't interested but because you have priced the meal out of its budget.
Definition: pursuit distance
Pursuit distance is how far a trout will currently travel from its holding position to attack prey. It expands with warmer water, higher prey value and lower predation risk, and contracts sharply in cold water. Matching your retrieve to the fish's current pursuit distance is the single most useful adjustment in streamer fishing.
Hold those two ideas — escape signature and pursuit cost — and every retrieve below sorts itself.
What it does: short sharp strips paired with a downward jab of a low rod tip, producing an erratic dart-dart-pause. The fly changes direction unpredictably and then stops dead.
What it exploits: the escape-then-vulnerability sequence. Erratic darting reads as a prey animal that has detected a predator and is failing to get away. The pause is the trigger — it converts a hard-to-catch target into an easy one, which is exactly the moment the energy math flips in the trout's favor. Most jerk-strip eats happen on the pause, not the pull.
When: water in the mid-50s and up, decent clarity, fish willing to move. This is a big-pursuit-distance retrieve. It is also the most fun, which is why people fish it in 40-degree water and catch nothing.
What it does: consistent length, consistent cadence, no drama. Six-inch pulls at one per second, or twelve-inch pulls at one per two seconds — pick a rhythm and hold it.
What it exploits: predictability. A steadily swimming baitfish is not panicking, which means it has not seen the trout, which means it is catchable. For an ambush predator, unalarmed prey is the highest-percentage target on the river. Steady retrieves also give the lateral line a clean, continuous signal to home in on — the reason this is my default in off-color water.
When: stained water, actively hunting fish, or any time the erratic stuff is producing chases that don't convert. If a fish tracks and turns off, the fly was probably behaving impossibly. Boring often wins.
What it does: cast down and across, let the current load the line, and let the fly swim across under tension to the dangle. Your hands mostly stay out of it.
What it exploits: trajectory. Under tension, the fly is always moving away from a fish holding in the current — which is the single most reliable prey signature there is. The swing also delivers the fly broadside first, then accelerates it out of the zone, creating a natural now-or-never moment near the end of the arc.
When: wide, even runs; wading; cold water where you want the fly working with minimal effort from the fish. The swing is the lowest-cost intercept for the trout, which is why it keeps producing when everything else stops.
What it does: pull the fly up with a strip or a lift, then let it fall on a controlled semi-slack line. Rise, fall, rise, fall.
What it exploits: the fall. A sinking, fluttering object reads as stunned or dying prey — maximum calories for near-zero pursuit cost. This is the retrieve that catches fish in cold water when nothing else will, because it is the only one that doesn't ask the trout to sprint.
When: cold water, deep slow buckets, fish glued to the bottom, or any time you've marked fish that will not commit. The eat almost always comes on the drop, which means you will feel it as weight, not a tug — you have to be watching your line, not waiting for a jolt.
What it does: from a boat, land the fly within inches of the bank — in the grass, off the rock, under the overhang — and immediately pull it away from cover with two hard strips.
What it exploits: the flush. Something that leaves structure has just given up its protection, and predators everywhere are wired to respond to that. This is a context retrieve as much as a motion retrieve: the same two strips ten feet off the bank do not produce the same response.
When: float trips, undercut banks, woody structure, low light. This is where a rowing guide earns their money, because the retrieve is 20% hand and 80% where the fly lands.
Stop choosing by preference and start choosing by variable. Here is the decision I actually run:

Then change one variable at a time. Speed first, then depth, then direction, then fly. Changing three things at once feels productive and teaches you nothing — you cannot tell which change did the work, so you can't repeat it. Single-variable testing is the difference between fishing and guessing, and it is why we make people keep a river journal.
Two things, both behavioral, both about you rather than the fish.
Strip-set, not trout-set. With a streamer under tension, lifting the rod pulls the fly up and away from a fish that has it sideways in its mouth. A hard pull with the line hand, rod tip still low, drives the hook home and keeps the fly in the zone if you miss. Simple to describe. Genuinely hard to install, because you have spent years being reinforced for lifting the rod on a dry fly.

That is not a character flaw; it is competing history. Undoing it needs the same thing any motor skill needs: task analysis — breaking the movement into its component steps — and then shaping, which means reinforcing successive approximations rather than waiting for the whole thing to arrive correctly. We start people stripping with the rod tip physically touching the water so that lifting is mechanically impossible, and fade that constraint out as the new response takes hold. That is how we teach everything.
And a warning about your own conditioning. Fishing pays off on a variable-ratio schedule — an unpredictable number of casts per fish. That schedule builds enormous persistence and it also reinforces whatever you were doing when the fish ate, including the irrelevant parts. Every angler carries a few superstitions installed exactly this way. The retrieve you "always" catch fish on may simply be the retrieve you always fish.

A: There isn't one. The best retrieve is the one that matches current conditions: jerk-strip in warm clear water with willing fish, steady strip in stained water or when fish chase without eating, sink-and-draw in cold water, down-and-across swing in big even runs, and a bank-tight flush from a boat along structure.
